Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library




    Trainers at the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library teach computer classes every month but December. Not all classes are offered every month, but most of the “Basic” classes are offered each month. The “Advanced” classes are taught on a more variable schedule. See the Events Calendar for the current schedule, and call the Information Desk for class availability. Students must have a valid Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library card before registering for classes. If you are interested in learning something that we don’t list below, feel free to email us and make a suggestion.

    BASIC CLASSES

    General Computing




    Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW)


    • Internet I - Introduction: Basic information the Internet and how to use the Internet Explorer browser. Learn to use browser icons and find a known Web address.
    • Internet II - How to Search the Web: Learn techniques for finding information on the World Wide Web, including website evaluation, search engine evaluation, and search commands.
    • Investigate your Library Website: Learn to reserve, request and renew materials from the comfort of home; discover our databases with magazine articles, test prep materials for SAT, PSAT, civil service, and much more. Prerequisite: Internet 1; bring library card!
    • Google!: Do you Google? Learn about Google's advanced search features and special services and tools. For the new and experienced "Googler".
    • Yahoo! Email: Students will sign up for free Yahoo! email accounts, learn to send and receive email messages, use address book. (If you already have a Yahoo! account, please make sure you know your user name and password!)


    Word Processing


    • Basic Microsoft Word I - Introduction: Learn how to create and save a document, copy, cut and paste text, and navigate the Word icons and menus.
    • Basic Microsoft Word II - Selecting, Formatting and Viewing
      Make your documents look the way you want them to! Select text precisely, use the Format menu, use the Zoom tool and choose the best view to work in.
    • Basic Microsoft Word III - Tabs, Tables, Numbers and Lists: Tools to organize your documents! Arrange information using tabs and tables; learn to manage numbers and lists.


    ADVANCED CLASSES

    Advanced classes are usually not offered every month. Schedules are varied to try to cover most advanced classes every few months. Students should be familiar with the Basic class skills before registering.


    General Computing


    • Intermediate Computers 1: Customize your Desktop and Taskbar: Change/rearrange desktop icons and taskbar contents; show/hide taskbar, use taskbar icons
    • Intermediate Computers II: Organize Your Favorites: Manage favorites in Internet Explorer; use the Links bar, save sites to disk or desktop.
    • Computer Security: Learn to back up essential files, use Windows Update, install and use antivirus software, firewalls, and anti-spyware software, scan and defragment your hard drive.


    Internet and the World Wide Web


    • HTML I - Introduction: Learn how to set up a basic web page using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Students should be familiar with the Internet and have basic keyboarding skills.


    Word Processing


    • Intermediate Microsoft Word I - Introduction to Graphics: Add graphics to your Microsoft Word documents and control how they interact with document text. Class will discuss WordArt, Clip Art and graphics from files.
    • Intermediate Microsoft Word II - Columns, Sections & Editing Tricks: Divide documents into columns and sections; work with ‘Find and Replace’ and other editing tools.
    • Intermediate Microsoft Word III - Tools: Explore advanced tools and automatic settings in Microsoft Word; customize toolbars and menus.
    • Intermediate Microsoft Word IV - Mail Merge: Use Word to keep address lists; print “form letters” and address labels.
    • Advanced Microsoft Word I: Graphics Continued: Create complex graphics in Word. Use AutoShapes and the Drawing Toolbar; group graphics; insert pictures from files, create captions.
    • Advanced Microsoft Word II: Managing Long Documents: Use styles and sections to consistently format long documents; create tables of contents; manage headers and footers
    • Advanced Microsoft Word III: Managing Long Documents, The Sequel: Create templates from your documents; make indexes; use reviewing tools..


    Spreadsheets


    • Microsoft Excel I - Introduction and DataEntry: Learn to start Excel, save and open spreadsheets, copy and paste cells, select and insert rows and columns, type text and numbers.
    • Microsoft Excel II - Formulas and Functions: Learn to do basic mathematical calculations with Excel.
    • Microsoft Excel III - Formatting and Printing: Format Excel spreadsheets, control how numbers display, add colors, borders, use conditional formatting; learn printing, control page divisions, print row and column headers, and more.
    • Microsoft Excel IV - Charts/Graphs: Explore Excel’s chart-making abilities. Create several types of charts, format charts, enhance and control axes, scales, labels.
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel I - Workbooks and Advanced Formulas/Functions: Group worksheets, customize workbooks, perform calculations on groups of worksheets, learn financial and logical functions. Students must have taken the Basic Excel series or be familiar with formulas, functions and formatting in Excel.
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel II - Data Analysis Tools: Troubleshoot formulas and functions, import text files, group and subtotal data, use data filters and tools including Paste Special and Goal Seek.Students should have taken all previous Excel classes or be familiar with the skills covered.


    Desktop Publishing


    • Microsoft Publisher I - Introduction: Use this desktop-publishing tool to create business cards, invitations, newsletters and other documents. Must have basic word processing skills.
    • Microsoft Publisher II - Advanced: Using a newsletter as an example, learn to flow and organize text, customize colors, and use other advanced techniques in Microsoft Publisher.


    Presentation Software (“Slide-show”)


    • Microsoft PowerPoint I - Introduction: Create a quick slide-show presentation using PowerPoint’s AutoContent Wizard. Familiarity with word processing required. Bring a floppy disk to save your project.
    • Microsoft PowerPoint II - A Closer Look: Delve more deeply into tools for enhancing your PowerPoint presentations. We will cover toolbars, text boxes, slide objects and more.


    Databases


    • Microsoft Access I - Introduction: The User’s POV, and Tables Look at Access from an office worker’s point of view, then learn how to set up a database, create and modify tables. Students should be comfortable using a PC; familiarity with word processing and spreadsheets very helpful.
    • Microsoft Access II - Tables and Relationships: Create lookup fields, set field properties in tables, sort and filter records, create relationships between tables. Students should have taken Microsoft Access I.
    • Microsoft Access III - Queries: Continuation of previous month’s Access series. Learn to retrieve information from a database using select queries. Sort and filter data, use update queries.
    • Microsoft Access IV - Forms: Create well-designed and easy-to-use forms for data entry and retrieval.
    • Microsoft Access 5 - Reports: Design and create reports to display Access data.
    • Microsoft Access 6 - Finishing Touches: Create a Switchboard to guide users in using your database; use passwords to protect data.
